What the four steps are for

Ask what makes DTF hard and most people point at colour: getting a bright design to survive on a black t-shirt. That part is already solved by the time the film reaches the garment, the white ink layer underneath does it automatically. What actually decides whether a DTF transfer holds together is temperature, time, and a layer of powder the customer never sees.

DTF prints the design onto PET film, coats it in adhesive powder, cures the powder into a resin layer, then presses the whole thing onto the fabric with heat. No pre-treatment. No separate setup for light garments and dark ones. Everything below is what those four steps are actually doing.

Printing the film

The design goes onto the film reversed, so it reads correctly once it's pressed the right way round. Colour goes down first. A solid white layer goes on top of it as backing, the reason the design stays readable on navy, black, or anything else that isn't white. Lay that white layer thin and the design goes grey on a dark shirt. Nobody notices until the garment is already on the rack.

Powder and cure

While the ink is still wet, we dust the film with a TPU hot-melt adhesive powder and shake off what didn't stick. The film then runs through a curing oven, where heat turns the powder into a flexible resin. Too little cure and the transfer lifts at the first wash. Too much, and the film goes brittle before it ever reaches a garment. This step is timed and checked. Not eyeballed.

The press

The cured film goes face-down on the garment and gets pressed at 140 to 165 degrees Celsius for 10 to 15 seconds. Peel it while it's still warm and the print lifts with it, so it waits until it's cool. A second press with parchment paper over the top does nothing for how the design looks and everything for how long it survives the wash.

Where it fits, and where it doesn't

DTF works on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blended fabrics, and on some non-textile surfaces too, wood and certain rigid materials among them. A single film sheet can carry several designs for different products in the same run, which is what makes it a fit for short runs and personalised orders rather than one pattern repeated at volume.

It isn't the cheapest option once a run gets large. Screen print still wins there, and a DTF transfer sits slightly proud of the fabric in a way screen print usually doesn't. On a lightweight t-shirt, that's the first thing a hand notices.

The part most comparisons leave out

Curing the adhesive powder produces fumes. Ventilation, or a filtration system, isn't optional. It's part of the setup cost that rarely makes it onto a product page.
