Not a compromise material
Most people assume recycled polyester is the trade-off version of the real thing: weaker, softer, doesn't last as long. It isn't. Recycled polyester, rPET, is polyester made from post-consumer plastic waste, most often PET bottles, sometimes discarded garments and industrial offcuts. Same strength. Same wrinkle resistance. Same ability to hold color. The difference is where it starts: a bottle that already existed, not oil pulled fresh out of the ground.
From bottle to yarn
Plastic waste gets collected and sorted, mostly PET bottles. It is cleaned, shredded into flakes, and melted into pellets. The pellets are extruded into fine fiber, spun into yarn, then woven or knitted into fabric. Four steps between a bottle in a bin and a jacket on a shelf, using considerably less energy than making the same fiber from virgin fossil fuel.
Where it earns its place
Fleece jackets, backpacks, sports bags, lanyards, technical outerwear: this is where rPET is at its best, because polyester's own properties are the actual reason for choosing it, not an afterthought. Durability, color retention, resistance to weather and repeated use. It also works well for branded accessories and event merchandise, anywhere a product needs to survive more handling than a natural fiber would.
It's not the answer for everything. Ask for a natural hand feel, cotton or silk, and there is no polyester alternative that solves that, recycled or not.
What we ask before we source it
rPET still sheds microplastics in the wash. That's unresolved, not by us and not by anyone else in the synthetic textile industry, and it's worth saying plainly rather than leaving it out. Not all rPET is equal either. Source material, recycling process, and certification vary between suppliers, and a "made from recycled bottles" line on a spec sheet is not proof of anything by itself. GRS, the Global Recycled Standard, is the label most suppliers point to. It's worth understanding what it actually verifies before it goes on a client's product page as a selling point.
Where the conversation starts
rPET uses less energy than virgin polyester, draws less on fossil fuel, and puts plastic waste to use instead of leaving it to sit. It is not a perfect material. Cheaper per unit and better for the brand are not the same question, and neither is answered by a bottle count on a hangtag. For clients who need the performance of a synthetic fabric and want the material choice to hold up under a real question, rPET is usually where we start.
