What people assume, and what actually changes

rPET sounds like the problem with polyester is solved. Recycled, made from something that already existed, so surely the environmental question is closed. What actually changes is where the plastic comes from: a bottle instead of newly drilled oil. What doesn't change is what happens to that plastic once it's fabric, in a washing machine, for years afterward.

From bottle to yarn

The process starts with collecting and sorting plastic waste, mostly PET bottles. Those get cleaned, shredded into flakes, and melted into pellets, which are then extruded into fine fibres, spun into yarn, and woven or knitted into fabric. Functionally the result sits close to virgin polyester: same strength, same wrinkle resistance, same colour hold. It uses considerably less energy to get there and draws nothing new out of the ground, which is the entire point of choosing it.

Where it performs best

Fleece jackets, backpacks, sports bags, lanyards, and technical outerwear are where rPET earns its place without asking anyone to compromise on performance. It works just as well for branded accessories and event merchandise built to last more than one season. Put it on a giveaway meant for a single afternoon, and the fibre's whole reason for existing goes unused.

What's worth asking before sourcing it

rPET still sheds microplastics in the wash. Recycling the input doesn't change that, and anyone presenting it as a fix for the whole problem is skipping the part that's actually unresolved across the industry. Not all rPET is equal either: the source material, the recycling process, and what a supplier will show you as proof of it all vary. A GRS label is a starting point for that conversation, not the end of it, and we ask suppliers what's behind theirs rather than stopping at the logo.

Why it's still a step forward

The case for rPET over virgin polyester holds up: less energy, less reliance on new fossil fuel, and a direct use for plastic that would otherwise sit in the environment for a long time. It isn't a perfect material, and it doesn't need to be sold as one to be worth choosing. For a brand that needs the performance of a synthetic and wants the sourcing to say something honest, rPET is where that conversation starts. Not where it ends.
