Most New Year merchandise ends its life in january

A New Year gift has to stay useful after the holidays. The wrapping disappears quickly, a seasonal design dates fast, and things made only for december rarely get a second life.

So choose what people will use on ordinary working days. A mug, a notebook, a bag, or good clothing gets through the holiday season without effort and carries on working in january.

A New Year pack is four items, packed as one

A New Year pack is a handoff: the year closes, people take a week off, and they come back to a desk that looks exactly as it did in December. A good pack changes what is on that desk, and that is the whole ambition: not to mark the party, but to still be there in the first working week of the year.

The format that works is a curated set: three or four items chosen to go together, packed as one thing, not a bag of leftovers from the stockroom. We have sent both, and the difference shows up in how many parcels sit unclaimed at reception.

Notebooks, pens, and the print that wears off

Notebooks and pens carry the least risk in the whole category, because everyone uses them and nobody has to like the design to do it. A planner does more: it gives someone a place to put the goals they set in the first week and forget by the third.

Getting this wrong costs little per unit and a lot in total, and a pen that skips on the second page is remembered as a pen from your company that skips. We check print adhesion on the barrel before a run goes out, because a logo that wears off in a fortnight is worse than no logo at all. Many of our own lines are priced with decoration included, which removes the usual argument about whether the print is worth the extra.

The bag outlives the gift box

Tote bags and backpacks solve two things at once: they hold the pack, and then they hold something else for years. Gift boxes go into the recycling in January, and a bag does not.

The admission here: a cheap tote is a false economy, because thin cotton photographs the same as 180 g/m² and tears the first time somebody puts a laptop in it. We quote the heavier weight and lose deals on price for it.

Bottles and hoodies still in use in february

A water bottle on a desk in the first week of January, a hoodie worn through the cold months, a charging device used every day without anyone thinking about it: these are the items that keep working long after the reason for giving them has been forgotten.

Cheaper per unit is not cheaper if half of it never leaves the shelf, and a bottle that leaks in a bag is thrown out that same week, taking the brand with it.

Twenty minutes before the food

New Year's Eve is also a natural point to look forward together, and a short goal-setting session, informal, about what the team actually wants from the year, does more than the gift on its own. Set next to the pack, it makes the whole thing personal instead of procedural.

Not every team wants this: some read it as work smuggled into a party, and they are not wrong. Twenty minutes in the room before the food, not a workshop.

Sizes in november, or nothing in january

Two things go wrong, sizes and dates: apparel ordered on a guess leaves the tallest person on the team with nothing, and fixing that in January costs more than the original order did, so ask for sizes in November even though it spoils the surprise.

On dates: factories stand still for weeks around the turn of the year, everyone in this industry orders inside the same six weeks, and custom development takes longer than stock. If the brief lands in mid December, we will tell you what is actually achievable, which is usually stock items decorated here rather than the piece you saw and wanted.

One production run, sent out all year

Clients order through us and store with us, so one production run sits in our warehouse in Stockholm and we send from it as people join or as a department asks, which is how the New Year pack becomes the onboarding pack in March: same items, same print, no second setup.

Stock only works if it moves, so we report quantities and movements to make a stalled programme visible, and we would rather have that conversation in month four than find the same pallet untouched a year later.

The handoff, not the party

The way a year begins tends to shape how it continues, and a company that acknowledges its people at the turn of the year, with something considered and useful, sees it in how the team shows up in January. New Year's Eve is not just a party: it is a handoff from one chapter to the next.

Type, material, weight, timing. Sizes asked for in November. Print that survives the first wash. That is our corner of the business. And the question underneath it: why some New Year gifts are still in use in February, and others were finished the moment the wrapping came off.
