A cookie worth sharing
Hallongrotta is a small shortbread cookie with raspberry jam in the middle, and it is easy to build something larger than a coffee break around it. A plate, a mug, a bag with a couple of cookies or a small gift turn an ordinary treat into a reason to stop together and make the day a little better.
After that it depends on what should remain once the gathering is over. Some of it goes on the table, some of it goes home with people, and some of it is chosen so that it actually gets used long after the event itself.
A sweet tradition
In Sweden the raspberry cookie is called hallongrotta: small shortbread cookies with a thumbprint filled with bright raspberry jam. They belong to the kafferep, the Swedish coffee gathering, and to fika, which is less a break than a habit. The day sits on 23 January, in the darkest part of the Swedish winter, which is when coffee and something sweet do the most work. No authority declared it, and it is celebrated the only way it can be, by someone deciding to bake.
That is also what makes it easy to mark. Someone bakes, someone puts the coffee on, and the room is warmer than it was ten minutes earlier, with no booking and no programme behind it.
Setting the table
A day like this happens at a table, so the things that work are the things a table needs: a plate, a tray, something to carry the cookies in from the kitchen. Pieces from the foodware collection sit inside the occasion and stay useful long after it, and kitchen accessories make sense for a day built on baking and sharing.
Getting this wrong is quiet and slow. A mug printed with the wrong method looks right on the day and comes out of the dishwasher a month later with half a logo on it. We print ceramics by sublimation for that reason, because the image goes into the surface rather than onto it. On our own lines the decoration is included in the price, so nobody has to choose between a good print and the budget.
Sending people home with something
Most branded t-shirts are worn once, politely, and then not again. A branded t-shirt earns a second wearing when the fit is ordinary and the print is smaller than the marketing department wanted it, which is the whole trick and mostly a matter of restraint.
For something lighter, paper bags with a few cookies and a short note give the day a shape people can carry out of the building. We assemble that kind of pack ourselves: bag, contents and note, counted and boxed in advance rather than on the morning of the day.
Gift cards instead of guesswork
Not every occasion needs a fixed gift. An Extravagance gift card lets people choose for themselves, which is an admission that we do not know what forty people want, and it keeps the brand in the room without pretending otherwise.
Buying once and pulling from stock
Bulk is cheaper per unit, and cheaper per unit is not cheaper if half of it is still on the shelf next spring. Clients who use merchandise all year order once and store it with us, then pull what they need when they need it: forty bags in February, twelve mugs in June. The warehouse is in Stockholm, so a small order for Thursday does not wait on a container.
Jam in the middle, a print that survives a dishwasher, a bag that leaves the building with someone: that is our corner of the business. And the question underneath it is why one thing handed out on a small occasion becomes part of someone's week, while another never gets used twice.
Four things that stay after the day
The sections above are about the day itself. These are the items that most often end up in the set that goes with it, chosen for the part of the year when nobody is thinking about 23 January any more.
- Vera Stoneware Mug: a heavy stoneware mug for the coffee the cookies are made for, and for every ordinary morning after that.
- Americano Thermos Mug with Handle 350ml: keeps the coffee hot through a long meeting and survives the walk between the kitchen and the desk.
- Bucharest Thermal Bottle 500 ml: for the people who take the coffee with them, on the commute or out of the office entirely.
- Cool T: an ordinary t-shirt that gets worn a second time, which is the only measure of a good one.
The day is a simple reason to make a working day better and get a team round one table. Add things people go on using afterwards, and the impression does not end with the last cookie.
